How to invest your spare change

MoneyIf you want to start investing, you no longer need thousands of dollars to make it worthwhile.  Thanks to technology the barrier to entry has never been lower.  In fact, you can get started investing with as little as $5.

Now while investing $5 isn't going to make you a millionaire, everyone needs to start somewhere.  So why not start investing your spare change!  Here are some options to invest with little money…

Acorns is probably my go to recommendation for people looking to start investing.  Acorns is an app that rounds up the purchases you make to the nearest dollar and automatically transfers the difference to an investment account.    This money is then invested across a diverse set of assets based on a portfolio you choose.  You can choose to have a more aggressive portfolio (great for young investors) or a more steady low risk one.

Acorns does charge a monthly fee of $1.   However, I've found that the growth in my investment on acorns has far outweighed the fees.  Acorns is a great way to get introduced to investing – in fact this app provides access to index funds, bonds and stocks that you just never would have been able to invest in before.

Robinhood is a stock trading app available in the U.S.  But what makes Robinhood different is that it doesn't charge any fees.

In the past, if you wanted to invest in stocks, you would need to do so with a sizable chunk of funds.  Why?  Because the brokerage fees were really high and investing with small amounts of capital just wasn't worth it.

Robinhood is different.  This means it doesn't really matter how few shares you want to buy.  You can buy a single share if you want!  This also means that you can invest smaller amounts on a more regular basis.  A great investing strategy.

eToro is a copy trading platform.  The idea behind this is you follow traders, and whenever they make a trade your account automatically does too.  Copy Trading gives you access to riskier forex markets as well as stocks and commodities.   Everyday traders make a lot of money from these markets, and etoro wants to allow ordinary folks the chance to access these markets too.

eToro is higher risk than Acorns or Robinhood (although you can just invest in stocks on etoro too), but it does offer potentially much higher returns.

Cryptocurrency has exploded over the last few years.  And if you had invested a couple of years ago, you would have made a huge return.  The great thing about crypto is that the cost of investing is very little.  You can get started with just a few dollars on Coinbase.

On Coinbase, you can purchase Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin – the most popular cryptocurrencies.  And doing so is quick and easy.

Obviously crypto is also high risk.  Personally I'm not concerned if I don't make much from it – it's just good to be part of the journey.    But it's important to not get carried away and invest more than you can afford to lose.
