eToro Investing Guide

I've been trading on etoro for the past few years.  I've tried both copy trading on eToro, where you copy the trades made by other traders as well as investing in stocks and cryptocurrency.   I wanted to put together this guide to share with you my tips and tricks for using eToro and how you too can make the most of this exciting platform.

So What Exactly is eToro?

eToro is a social trading platform.  It's a bit like combining a traditional forex broker with a
social network like facebook.  Basically, every time you make a trade, it's shared with the rest of the community.  The flip side is, every time a trader makes a trade it's also shared.  So you can see exactly what trades the professionals are making – all in realtime.

You can invest in currency (forex),  real stocks (like apple, google etc) and CFD Stocks cryptocurrencies, ETFs more. Personally I invest mostly in stocks and currency and I copy trade other investors who do the same.

Copy Trading is the Secret to investing on eToro

Unless you're an expert banker or economist, I wouldn't recommend trading forex on your own.  It takes years of practice and a strong understanding of both technical and fundamental economics.  Most people who try investing in forex on their own end up losing money.

The good news is, that using etoro, you can automatically copy all the trades of experienced, professional traders.  All you have to do is pick the right traders.

Getting Started investing on Etoro

Make sure you follow these steps.  If you just open an account, and start following random traders and opening your own trades, you are going to fail – trust me, I've been there.

Step 1: Open a new account with etoro using this link.  You don't need to deposit any money if you don't want to.  You can try out eToro for free as they give you $100k in virtual money.

Step 2: Copy some traders.  Just hit the big blue button on the trader's profile.  I like to copy a trader with a minimum of $200.   So who should you copy?  Copy traders with a low risk score, and between 10-30% return over the past 12 months.  This will give you a nice return without having to copy a trader who is using a risky trading strategy.

Step 3: Sit back and wait.  Patience is the key.  Some traders will only open 1 or 2 trades each week. Some will open lots.  The important thing is to not get impatient and start messing about.  If a trader, after 3 weeks isn't showing any gains then you should stop copying them.  Come back to this list and copy the new traders.  Although, I'm pretty good at picking the right people to follow.

My Top Tips for Investing on eToro

  • Don't manually trade.  One mistake I made early on, was opening trades on my own.  I didn't have the knowledge or experience to do it.  And it cost me.  Don't make the same mistake.  Only use copy trading to begin with.   If you want to manually trade, start with a practice account.
  • Copytrade 4 Different People. Copy trading just one trader will leave your account vulnerable.  Spread the risk and copy trade 4 different people.
  • Don't Copy Traders Who have a 100%+ Gain.  These traders are employing high risk strategies.  Aim to follow traders who are gaining around 30%.  That is still an amazing return, yet without the stupid risk.
  • Copy Traders with 12+ Months History.  Only copy traders who have at least 12 months of history on eToro.  This way you know they are a good trader and haven't just been lucky.

This is not investment advice. Your capital is at risk

    • It’s a CFD so no it won’t offer dividends and you’ll need to sell it in order to make a profit. This past year I’ve been exclusively investing in Apple (aapl) which doesn’t offer dividends anyway. I bought in around $95 and sold out at $119. There is plenty of profit to made using this method

    • follow the blog – when I come across a new trader who I believe is worth copying I feature them in a blog post

    • If 10 copiers start copying you then yes. You become what’s known as a “popular investor” on etoro and you get big cash rewards. etoro is very generous as rewarding the traders who show consistent monthly gains.

  1. Hi! Thank you for your experience, very interesting to see how you make money with etoro. I´ve recently began copy trading. I´m on the road to a popular investor i hope 🙂

Can you tell me what your nickname is on etoro?

    Greetings from Germany,
    Tobias

  2. hi , whatthe difference between copying with 100$ and 500$ ? cause i copy traders with 100$ or 200$ nothing change , all operations between 1$ and 2$ ??? what should i do ?? and thank you

  3. Hi,thanks for ur exprience,im.very much appreciate to see the info that you have shared. Im actually a begginer, now my question is how can i copy more trades with just $200? Do i need to put more deposit just to copy more traders?
Thank u for ur future comment 🙂

    • the minimum copy amount on etoro is now $100. So with $200 you can copytrade two traders. That might be enough to begin with. Test it out, see how it goes and then try expanding one trader at a time.

  4. Hello,
I don´t think you can actually make any decent profit with 500 by copying low risk traders, i
I give you an example, I trade on etoro myself, I did started the same way you recomend, but very soon I realized that is not a way to make money.
I´ve been copytrading one very good trader with 250, in 2 months, my profit is around 10… many people think, they can make money easily this way, with few hundreds, big amount is required for good income from copytrading.

    • You’re right, it does take a larger starting balance to see bigger profits.

It depends on your definition of “decent profit”. $10 return on 250 in 2 months means you’ll be on track to see a 24% annual return. I don’t know many investments that deliver that type of return. Obviously this will compound as well.

$250 is quite a small amount to invest on etoro, and these days I recommend investing more if you can afford it.

  5. Hi, I am copying someone on Etoro. It does show profit in there but do i need to close the trade to get the profit?

    • No. The trader you are copying will close the trade. It is possible to manually close individual trades, but the trader may be waiting to see the profit increase even more. If you close copied trades manually, you won’t end up with the same growth as the trader you copy. Of course, if you are confident in trading, feel free to make your own decisions 🙂

  6. I’m a totally a beginner to eToro and I only got demo account to practice trading before really putting my money in.
And I found some strange issues.
    1. When you hold a stock or the FX money into your portfolio, you can sell it anytime you see the benefit is made as the manual trading. How could you make the loss if you can make the decision on when to sell? My guess was just clicking the wrong timing by 1.2% or some profits and the clicking duration goes wrong and the rate is -0.1% or something. In my virtual money case, I usually close the trade for more than 6% profit. And I have all the possitive balances. The currency could be sold instantly.

    2. CFDs have some pending time and selling durations. Will it make the stock not to be sold smoothly for making money and cause the loss due to the rate change during the waiting duration?

    • Yes, thats the great thing about CFDs – they aren’t options so there is no expiry.

I don’t think there is a pending time for stock cfds. There used to be – eToro used to process stock trades once a day, but that has now changed. And it’s done instantly. I haven’t come across any slippage issues when closing out my stock positions.

  7. Hi,

Please teach me how to use Virtual portfolio on eToro.

As a beginner can i make any profit by only using Virtual portfolio ?

    Thank you

    • No, a virtual portfolio is only for practice trading and you can’t make any real money from it. I’ve posted lots of posts on this blog about practice trading.

  8. Wow, I’m glad I stumbled across this post! eToro sounds very innovative. I never cease to be amazed with all the trading options that are coming out. So when you copy a trader does it just make proportionate trades? For example, if a trader I copy has $10,000 to trade with and I only have $1,000 will my trades simply be 1/10th the size of the trader I’m copying?

  9. Hi

Maybe a dumb question but when copytrading if I copy someone with $100 and over the course of time make $50 profit is this reinvested for me by them so in effect at some point I will have $150 dollars invested in them?

Or would I have to stop copying them. Take the profit which would give me $150 in my account then recopy them so I now have $150 invested

    • The profits will be used to reinvest. As time goes on, and as your profit grows, you can reduce the amount and transfer some back to your account – I do this just so that my portfolio stays in balance.

  10. Thanks for the reply I understand now. Do you know if I use joining link above how much bonus etoro give to use? I’m depositing $300 to start with which I’ve seen online can get $100 etoro bonus using the code start100 to use just for investing. Would it also include a referral bonus for you and me e.g an extra $20. Making $120 bonus in total.

    Cheers Gary

  11. unbelievable that you say in your article to stop after 3 weeks if a trader didn’t made any gain. Anyone who is involved in trading knows that its mid to long term. A trader with good history track should be followed at least for year to give him a fair chance

  12. I wish to copy a trader on etoro. I have understudy a trader for over a month now. he has never made a loss. he makes between 2% to 3% . I wish to start with $200 . the minimum profit that could be withdrawn from etoro platform is $50. pls how can I accumulate up to $50 with this amount I wish to deposit

    • You’ll still be able to withdraw the amount that you’ve invested ($200). If you’re wishing to withdraw the profits, I recommend reinvesting them until you have a larger amount.

      • Hello there, great to see the flow in conversation and much interest in Etoro. I’ve also invested quite a bit so far, around 5k – thinking of putting much more down especially with some sick Popular Investors out there (check out Aimstrader).
My one worry – anyone had bad experience by having issues in withdrawing big sums of money?
My reason for hesitating putting 10k or more down.
Thanks and good trading to all, Tassilo

  13. I currently copy a trader, just wanted to ask what’s the smartest way to work with the profit earned over time. I have current profit and ‘total closed’ profit.

I assume if stop copying the total closed profit will go back into the etoro account plus the current profit if any is along with the original investment?

I understand using the gear wheel under the portfolio you can withdraw some funds, and then could just take out whatever the total closed amount is.

    Appreciate your thoughts

    • Hi,

I want to trade stocks listed in the United States with virtual money. Is it possible to do this without copying other traders and making my portfolio public in orde for their members to track my returns?

  14. little bit late to the party but im excited to start this. I have lost several hundred ££ on Plus500, made some initial gains then my lack of knowledge bit me. Excited to follow some experts and find a way to make some more money from my money

  15. I made manually trade.. Very2 fast trade if i buy & close it back.. Dont trade like me if you dont have time to do it.. I have a time coz im fully a trader at home..so i dont have comitment.. The trade of commudities are very fast to go high & very fast to go down..so i do buy or sell both.. When i just close buy low & sell high, then i wait for the minutes or hour look when the trade point become suistable for me to sell high & buy low.. Dont do like im doing.. Because you need stayed in front your computer or smartphone in about 8 hours.. I stop trade when night come.. This kind of trade you can generately about USD120 in about 8 hours everyday depends on how much USD did you invest…

  16. This is still a great article (and comments) all these years later. I started using eToro about 6 weeks ago, and it’s been fantastic. I’ve had decent amount of cash in a savings account (earning crap interest), so decided to move it into eToro, and gradually invested across a diversified portfolio. It’s been so liberating to take control of what that money is doing for me.

I’m so busy in my day-job that, realistically, I can’t “trade”. But being able to copy-trade is awesome. I copy somebody who trades equities, somebody you specialises in Forex, somebody else Crypto’s, somebody else Commodities, and so on. Some do a mix. Knocking off work each day, and checking my profit via the App is something I really look forward to. Sure there are down days, but predominately good days.

Probably worth mentioning, eToro has also a new introduced a new instrument called CopyPortfolio’s. E.g. I’ve taken positions on these like “Gaming Industry”, “Renewable Energy”, “Self Driving Cars Tech”, and so on. I tried other Apps/platforms, but found them too complicated. eToro is just sooo easy to use.

  17. New to stocks and etoro, is it possible to buy a stock which recently went down and thn wait maybe even a month until it goes up and sell it.
